Eco Villages
Lately, I’ve been entertaining the idea of going off the grid and starting a farm or homestead at some point in my life. Imagine: You have food growing in your backyard, loads of green space, animals & land to nurture, and fresh air to breathe. After doing a good amount of researching and learning about what this lifestyle entails, I realized that I would probably miss interacting with people on a day-to-day basis and having a community. So, naturally, when I began reading about Eco Villages I was captivated by the fusion of earth-conscious lifestyles and group living.
But what is an Eco Village? They come in all shapes and sizes, have widely different inhabitants, are placed all over the world, but are generally regarded as communities whose inhabitants seek to live in a way that has minimal impact on the environment.
These villages strive to:
become more socially, culturally, economically, and ecologically sustainable
live in harmony with the earth and their specific environment
produce the least possible amount of negative impact on the natural surroundings through intentional design and resident behavior choices
they often use natural or locally made materials, renewable energy, and grow food organically
many aim to be self-sufficient enough to survive “off-grid” even if they are located near cities
foster a strong sense of community within their members
There are so many extremely innovative eco-villages that I couldn't possibly list or describe them all but if you want to see what a few look like, where they’re located, how they’re designed, and why they might just be a major part of the future check out my rabbit hole library below:
